Visit to Uganda by United Nations Development Programme Administrator, Helen Clark14-May-2013
The UN Under-Secretary General and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Chair of the UN Development Group, Helen Clark, is in Uganda for her first official visit which started on the 13 May 2013 and will end on the 16 May 2013.
Helen Clark will deliver a keynote address at the 2013 Commonwealth Local Government Conference on the theme, "Local Government as a key partner in setting the Posst 2013 agenda to achieve sustainable development."
The Administrator has already held bilateral meetings with the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi.
She will also visit an inspiring conservation project on the shores of Lake Victoria where community groups, with UNDP support, are addressing land degradation, waste disposal, water pollution and the loss of bio diversity
Her visit also includes discussions with other senior government authorities and stakeholders in Uganda, including civil society organizations, women leaders and development partners, to exchange views on issues ranging from post-conflict recovery in Northern Uganda, good governance and accountability, sustainable natural resource management, the post 2015 agenda and progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals, all of which constitute core elements of UNDP’s focus in the country and, more generally, of the UN family’s work.
Highlights of the UNDP Administrator’s schedule:
Monday 13 May: Meetings in Kampala with the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni; the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi; and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kutesa.
Tuesday 14 May: Meetings with Uganda Ministers - The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Maria Kiwanuka; Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Irene Muloni; Minister of Water and Environment, Ephraim Kamuntu - discussions with Civil Society and Development partners
Wednesday 15 May: Visit to Entebbe to see the results of an inspiring community-led conservation project at Lake Victoria, supported by UNDP.
Thursday 16 May: Keynote address at the Commonwealth Local Government Conference, Commonwealth Resort, Munyonyo, entitled ‘Local government, providing a democratic voice and local accountability, delivering basic services, and serving as a key partner in setting the agenda to achieve sustainable development Post 2015’ .
There will be a press conference in Munyonyo following the keynote address from 15:30 – 16:00hrs.
