PRESS RELEASE: High level dialogue on Uganda’s Economy: Directions, Prospects and Challenges to be held in Kampala

Nov 3, 2015

Kampala – The state of the economy is everyone’s concern in Uganda today. A weakened shilling, high interest rates, and rising inflation are components that have become worrisome for many Ugandans.

It’s in recognition of this that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development have partnered with Makerere University’s School of Economics to host the High Level Dialogue of Uganda’s Economy – Directions, Prospects and Challenges.

Dr. Louis Kasekende, the Deputy Governor of Uganda’s Central Bank will deliver the keynote address which will highlight the key aspects of the theme. Other presenters from key government institutions will discuss how to bridge the gap between planning and implementation of national and global development agendas such as the Second National Development Plan (NDP II) and the Sustainable Development Goals and also how to align them to Uganda’s fiscal policy.

Discussions will also focus on how academia can be tapped into to carry out key research and provide innovative ideas on how to achieve the national and global development agendas while ensuring that development is equitable and reaches even the most vulnerable members of our society.

“The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is proud to have partnered with Makerere University and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to host this high level event which we hope will be a great start in finding solutions to some of the challenges facing Uganda’s economy,” Ms. Almaz Gebru, the UNDP Uganda Country Director said of the dialogue.

Recommendations from the dialogue which will be held in Makerere University's Main Hall, will contribute to UNDP and government’s discussions on how to use local resources to achieve sustainable development.
