PRESS RELEASE: UNDP Uganda to host the first meeting on Strengthening Inclusive Business Ecosystems in Africa

Apr 19, 2016

KAMPALA - As implementation of Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with its tagline on leaving no one behind takes off, doing business that includes all groups of people has become a key factor in extending the benefits of economic growth.

To achieve this, businesses need to be adopt an inclusive business model that ensures that the economically disadvantaged, low-income persons, women, youth and other socially excluded groups are able to benefit from economic growth. This can be done by bringing them on board as consumers, employees or entrepreneurs within the community of the business.

For this to materialise, the government and development partners need to work with the private sector to ensure that businesses are inclusive and can tackle development challenges that affect low income persons. Private Sector’s meaningful engagement with the poor can help in spurring market growth whilst ensuring they enjoy their rightful share of resulting economic gains.

It is for this reason that United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uganda will host 10 Chief Executive Officers’ (CEOs) of Uganda registered businesses and 60 key stakeholders from other African Countries to a breakfast meeting on inclusive business.

The breakfast meeting is intended to provide a forum for CEOs to share their experiences with Government counterparts and development players and also exchange ideas, challenges and opportunities that the private sector in Uganda employ while doing business in low-income markets.

Their ideas and experiences will be key in helping Governments, UNDP and other development actors in creating innovative solutions that ensure that low income persons and other socially excluded groups are able to participate in business and ultimately contribute to economic growth.

The breakfast is one facet of UNDP’s first meeting on Strengthening Inclusive Business Ecosystems in Africa in which over 60 participants from all over Africa will be trained and equipped with knowledge, skills and tools to foster business initiatives that accelerate the growth and scale-up of inclusive businesses.

With these skills, the participants who are UNDP Private Sector focal points and key national stakeholders will be better able to coordinate the diverse players within various business ecosystems to ensure that they practise inclusive business through the development and implementation of concrete action plans.

The Strengthening Inclusive Business Ecosystems in Africa meeting will take place on the 19 -21st April 2016 at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala. The CEO’s breakfast will take place on second day (20th April 2016) of the meeting and will be headlined by CEOs’ including Mr. Patrick Bitature, CEO of Simba Group, Ben Goulide, CEO of MTN Uganda and Amos Wekesa, Executive Director of Great Lakes Safaris among others.

It will also be attended by Hon. Dr. Maria Mutagamba, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities; and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator/ United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Ms. Rosa Malango.
